  • Tumeric With Your Bone Broth

    March 12, 2021 2 min read

We just want to update you about the potential benefits of turmeric, and specifically curcumin, the main active ingredient in turmeric, in the prevention and treatment of SARS-COVID-19.

    At-a-Glance

Turmeric & curcumin may reduce viral load (the amount of virus that can access your body) and disease severity from COVID-19.

Turmeric & curcumin can reduce the overactive immune response seen in severe COVID-19 cases meaning it could reduce potential lung tissue damage should you be infected.

Turmeric & curcumin are food so come with almost no side effects and are inexpensive

Turmeric & curcumin are more bioavailable taken in bone both as described here meaning they have an larger effect when consumed.

Bone Broth also increases glutathione (one of the main antioxidants in the body) that has shown to be beneficial during a COVID-19 infection (see here!).

    Geek-out Section

Previously we have written about adding turmeric or curcumin to your Bone Broth to enhance bioavailability of curcumin. So, at the end of reading this blog article I would recommend going back to this previous post for a refresher.

New data (1), out of India, suggests (this is being tested currently) that turmeric and curcumin utilise the ACE2 receptors to access the cells (think of this as a lock from a lock and key). COVID-19 also predominantly uses its spike glycoprotein in the cells’ ACE2 receptors to access our body (think of this as a key from our lock and key).

However, if a ‘key’ from turmeric or curcumin binds to the cells’ ‘locks’ instead it will limit the locks in your cells available for the COVID-19 ‘keys’ which will reduce the viral load (how much of the COVID-19 virus gains access to the body).

This is only early-stage research but the physiology makes perfect sense. The lower viral load gives more time for your immune system to mount an adequate defence and allows less viral replication of COVID-19, meaning a less severe response should you be infected.

This is not the end of the potential benefit though. This review (2) summarises the evidence from preclinical studies which show that curcumin could be effective preventing lung tissue damage. The mechanism is calming of the so called “cytokine storm” (overactive immune response) associated with severe COVID19 infections.

Given all the other benefits of taking turmeric and curcumin (3) we think it’s a no-brainer to add some turmeric to your Dr Gus’ Bone Broth Tea regularly. Curcumin powder also works quite well in Dr Gus’ Bone Broth Shakes for those of a sweeter disposition.

    Thanks for reading.
