Choosing a tallow balm starts with a simple question: would you prefer no added fragrance, or would you enjoy a botanical scent as part of your skincare routine?
At DR GUS nutrition, we make four Tallow Skin Balms: Unscented, Lavender, Chamomile, and Basil, Lime & Lemongrass. All use the same tallow-and-cacao-butter base. Our Unscented balm keeps that formula to just two ingredients, while the three scented options have essential oils added.
There is no single choice that is best for everyone. Your preference for scent, your skin’s tolerance of fragranced products and how you like to use your balm all matter.

Our balms begin with carefully prepared tallow from grass-fed, grass-finished, certified-organic cattle sourced from local UK farms. We combine it with certified-organic cacao butter, then whip the mixture as it cools to create its soft texture.
The difference between the options is the addition of essential oils—not a completely different moisturising base.
| Balm | What makes it different | A starting point for |
|---|---|---|
| Unscented | Tallow and cacao butter, with no added essential oils | People who prefer a minimal formula or no added fragrance |
| Lavender | The same balm base with a lavender-led botanical scent | People who enjoy lavender |
| Chamomile | The same balm base with a chamomile-led botanical scent | People who prefer chamomile |
| Basil, Lime & Lemongrass | The same balm base with a herbal-citrus scent | People who enjoy herbal and citrus notes |
Choosing a scented balm does not mean choosing a more powerful moisturiser. It means choosing a different scent experience alongside the same rich balm base.
Not necessarily. Natural ingredients can have a scent of their own, even when nothing has been added to perfume the product.
Our Unscented Tallow Skin Balm has a very light natural scent from its ingredients. It contains no added essential oils: just tallow and certified-organic cacao butter.
That distinction is worth understanding. “No added fragrance” does not always mean that you will smell absolutely nothing when you open the jar.
Across skincare generally, the word “unscented” can also be used for products containing ingredients that mask other smells. Dermatologists therefore recommend checking the formulation rather than relying on the name alone, particularly if you need to avoid fragrance.
With our Unscented Tallow Skin Balm, the two-ingredient formula makes the choice straightforward.
Unscented is a good starting point if you want to keep your skincare routine simple and prefer not to add essential oils.
You might choose it if:
You dislike fragrance in skincare.
You already wear perfume and do not want another scent alongside it.
You want the shortest ingredient list in our range.
You prefer one straightforward balm for face, hands and body.
Your skin has previously reacted to fragranced products.
For dry or sensitive skin, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends fragrance-free skincare. Avoiding added fragrance removes one potential source of irritation, although no formula can be guaranteed to suit every person.
Think of Unscented as the uncomplicated option: the balm base, without a botanical scent added on top.
No. You do not need sensitive skin to prefer a product without added fragrance.
Some people simply enjoy keeping their routine minimal. Others prefer their moisturiser not to compete with perfume, hand soap or other products they use throughout the day.
Choosing Unscented is a personal preference as much as a practical decision. It is not a compromise or an unfinished version of a scented balm.
If you enjoy scented skincare and your skin tolerates it, choose the option whose scent appeals to you most. There is no need to assign each scent to a particular skin type or expect it to deliver a different skin result.
Lavender is an option for anyone who already enjoys lavender-led skincare.
You may like using it during an evening routine simply because you enjoy the scent. That is a preference, not a promise that the balm will improve sleep or provide a therapeutic effect.
Choose Lavender because you like lavender—not because you need it for a particular time of day.
Chamomile offers another botanical choice for people who prefer it to lavender or herbal-citrus scents.
As with all three scented options, the essential oils add to the experience of using the balm. They do not replace the tallow-and-cacao-butter base or change the basic application method.
If chamomile is your preference, this is the scented option to explore.
For those who favour herbal and citrus notes, Basil, Lime & Lemongrass Tallow Skin Balm offers a different direction from Lavender and Chamomile.
It may appeal if floral scents are not your first choice. You can use it whenever it fits your routine; it is not restricted to morning application or body use.
All three scented options deserve consideration. The best choice is the one you enjoy using consistently.

Start with your existing preferences. If you usually avoid scented skincare, choose Unscented. If you already know that you enjoy lavender, chamomile or herbal-citrus scents, use that as your guide.
Do not assume that essential oils are automatically suitable for everyone because they are naturally derived. Natural fragrance ingredients can still cause reactions in some people, so check the full ingredient list and avoid anything you know you are sensitive to.
When trying a new balm, begin on a small area before using it widely. Stop if it causes redness, itching or discomfort.
Whichever option you choose, the application is the same:
Take a small amount with clean, dry fingertips.
Warm it briefly between your fingers.
Apply a thin layer to clean skin.
Add a little more only if needed.
You do not need to change your whole skincare routine or buy every scent. Start with one balm that suits your preferences and use it in the places where you want a richer moisturising step.
