Tallow balm is easy to store: keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and strong heat. Close the lid properly after use, and scoop from the jar only with clean, dry fingertips or a clean spatula.
DR GUS nutrition Tallow Skin Balms are made by hand in the UK with carefully prepared grass-fed, grass-finished organic tallow and certified-organic cacao butter. Because tallow and cacao butter are natural fats and butters, your balm may feel softer in a warm room and firmer when it is cooler. This is normal, and it does not automatically mean that anything is wrong with the balm.
A cool, dry drawer or cupboard is usually the best place to store tallow balm. Ideally, choose a place where the temperature is fairly steady and the jar will be protected from direct sun, steam and splashes.
Good places include:
A bedroom or dressing-table drawer.
A cool cupboard away from a radiator.
A bedside table that does not receive direct sunlight.
A bathroom drawer or closed cabinet, provided it stays dry and is away from shower steam and splashing water.
Try not to leave your balm:
On a sunny windowsill.
Beside a radiator, oven or other source of heat.
In a hot car.
Open near a bath, shower or sink.
With the lid loose or removed for long periods.
Heat, sunlight and air exposure can change a cosmetic product’s texture, colour and scent over time. Improper storage—particularly high temperatures or sunlight—can cause cosmetics to deteriorate more quickly.

Yes. Tallow balm can become much softer in a warm room and may melt in hot conditions. This is because the balm is made with natural tallow and cacao butter, rather than formulated as a rigid, highly synthetic cream.
If your balm softens or melts:
Put the lid on firmly.
Keep the jar upright.
Move it somewhere cool, out of direct sun and away from heat.
Let it cool and set naturally before using it again.
A melted balm may reset with a different appearance. It might look smoother on top, less whipped, or a little firmer in places than it did when first opened. A temperature-related change like this does not, by itself, mean that the balm has gone off.
During a warm spell or when travelling, keep the jar upright and avoid leaving it in a bag, car or windowsill where it can become very hot.

Natural fats and butters can sometimes develop a slightly grainier texture after changing temperatures. For example, a balm might soften in warmth, cool slowly, then reset with a different texture.
This is more noticeable in handmade balms because the texture comes from the natural characteristics of tallow and cacao butter. It is not a sign that the balm has been made incorrectly, and a grainier texture alone is not automatically a sign that the product is unusable.
If your tallow balm feels grainy:
Allow it to return to normal room temperature.
Warm a small amount between your fingertips before applying it.
Store it somewhere with a more stable temperature.
Avoid repeated cycles of heat and cold.
Do not add water, oil, fragrance or any other ingredient to the jar.
A small amount should soften as it warms against the skin. However, always follow the product information on your label and stop using any cosmetic product if you notice visible contamination, a clearly unusual smell or a change that concerns you.
Like all cosmetics, tallow balm has a period during which it is intended to perform as expected and remain suitable for use. The most reliable guide is the best-before date or Period After Opening (PAO) symbol on your DR GUS nutrition balm label, rather than a generic shelf-life claim found online.
The PAO symbol is the small open-jar icon with a number and “M”, such as 12M. It tells you the number of months a product is intended to be used after it has been opened.
Under Great Britain’s cosmetic-product rules, products with a durability of more than 30 months generally display the Period After Opening indication; products with a shorter durability carry a minimum-durability date, together with any storage conditions necessary to maintain it.legislation+1
To care for your balm:
Keep the lid closed when you are not using it.
Avoid getting water into the jar.
Use clean, dry fingertips or a clean spatula.
Store it away from direct heat and sunlight.
Follow the date and storage instructions printed on your own product label.
Stop using the balm if you see visible contamination, notice a distinctly sour, unpleasant or unusual smell, or observe a change that makes you concerned. Do not attempt to fix a cosmetic product by adding water, extra fragrance or other ingredients.
For most homes in the UK, tallow balm does not need to be refrigerated. A cool, dry drawer or cupboard is usually better for everyday storage.
If there is an unusually hot spell, you may choose to put the jar in the fridge for a short time to keep the balm firmer. If you do:
Keep the lid tightly closed.
Expect the balm to become much firmer.
Allow it to sit at room temperature briefly before use.
Avoid moving it repeatedly between the fridge and a hot room.
The goal is not to make the balm as cold as possible. It is to protect it from excessive heat and minimise big, repeated temperature changes. The FDA similarly advises storing cosmetics properly and notes that heat, sunlight and air can affect their texture, scent and quality.
How long a 30 mL jar lasts depends on how and where you use it.
For face-only use, a jar often lasts a couple of weeks or longer when you start with a small fingertip-sized amount. If you apply it to your hands, elbows, feet and other dry areas as well, you will get through it more quickly. A jar used across the whole body will naturally not last as long.
Begin with less than you think you need. Tallow balm is concentrated, and a small amount warmed between the fingertips can cover more skin than many first-time users expect.
For the simplest possible formula, choose Unscented Tallow Skin Balm. It is made with grass-fed tallow and certified-organic cacao butter, with no added essential oils.
The same care and storage advice applies to every DR GUS nutrition Tallow Skin Balm. Whether you choose Unscented or one of the botanical scented balms, store it somewhere cool, dry and away from direct sunlight.
For a softly botanical scented option, explore Chamomile Tallow Skin Balm. Lavender and Basil, Lime & Lemongrass are also available alongside Unscented in the full Tallow Balm Collection.

To help keep your tallow balm at its best:
Store it in a cool, dry place.
Keep it out of direct sunlight.
Keep it away from radiators, ovens and hot cars.
Close the lid properly after every use.
Use clean, dry fingertips or a clean spatula.
Check the best-before date or PAO guidance on the label.
Expect normal changes in firmness as room temperature changes.
Stop using it if you notice visible contamination or a clearly unusual smell.
Tallow balm does not need complicated care. Store it sensibly, use clean hands, and remember that slight changes in softness or texture can be a normal part of a balm made with natural tallow and cacao butter.
