Tallow balm is easy to use: start with a small amount, warm it between your fingertips, then apply it to clean skin—ideally while it is still slightly damp. Because it is a rich, water-free balm, a little goes a long way.

At DR GUS Nutrition, our tallow balms are made by hand in the UK with carefully prepared grass-fed, grass-finished organic tallow and certified-organic cacao butter. They are designed for people who prefer a straightforward, low-fuss moisturising routine with a short ingredient list.

How much tallow balm should you use?

The most important rule is simple: start smaller than you think you need.

Tallow balm is concentrated. Unlike a water-based lotion, it does not need to be pumped or spread over the skin in a large amount. It softens with the warmth of your fingers and leaves a rich, protective layer, so applying too much at once can make skin feel heavier than intended.

As a starting point, try:

  • Face: About half a pea-sized amount.

  • Hands: One pea-sized amount for both hands.

  • Elbows, knees or shins: One small pea-sized amount per area.

  • Feet and heels: A little more, particularly as an overnight treatment.

  • Small dry patches or cuticles: A rice-grain-sized amount is often enough.

You can always add another small amount if needed. Starting with less makes it easier to find the amount that feels right for your skin and the time of year.

How to apply tallow balm

Use tallow balm after cleansing, showering, bathing or handwashing—when skin is clean and still slightly damp.

  1. Scoop out a small amount with clean, dry fingertips.

  2. Warm it between your fingertips or palms for a few seconds.

  3. Press or massage it gently into the skin.

  4. Give it a moment to soften and settle before deciding whether you need more.

Applying moisturiser after washing is a practical way to support dry skin because it helps retain moisture at the skin’s surface. The NHS describes emollients as moisturisers used to stop skin becoming dry and to help protect it from irritants.

Can you use tallow balm on your face?

Yes—many people use tallow balm as part of a simple facial moisturising routine. The key is to use a very small amount, especially if you are used to lighter creams or lotions.

After cleansing, leave your skin lightly damp rather than completely dry. Warm approximately half a pea-sized amount of balm between your fingertips, then gently press it over the face. You can use a little more on areas that often feel dry or tight, such as the cheeks, around the mouth or the forehead.

For many people, tallow balm works best as the final step in an evening routine. During the day, use less if you prefer a lighter finish or plan to apply other products afterwards.

If you are trying a new skincare product for the first time, it is sensible to test it on a small area of skin before applying it widely. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests applying the product to a small test spot twice daily for seven to ten days and stopping use if redness, itching or swelling develops.

Our Unscented Tallow Skin Balm is the simplest place to start if you prefer no added scent and a minimal two-ingredient formula.

How to use tallow balm on hands and body

Tallow balm is particularly useful anywhere skin feels dry, rough or tight. Keep a jar where you will actually use it—beside the sink, by your bed or with your everyday skincare—and apply a small amount regularly rather than waiting until skin feels extremely dry.

Try using it:

  • After washing your hands.

  • After a bath or shower.

  • On elbows, knees and shins after towelling off.

  • On dry knuckles and cuticles.

  • On feet and heels before bed.

  • During cold, windy or centrally heated weather, when skin can feel more dry than usual.

For hands, massage the balm over the backs of the hands, palms, fingers and around the nails. For feet, apply a more generous layer before bed and allow it to settle before putting on cotton socks if that is comfortable for you.

When is the best time to apply it?

There is no single “right” time—regular use matters more than a complicated routine. However, these moments often work especially well:

  • After washing: Apply while skin is still a little damp.

  • In the evening: Use it as a richer final moisturising step.

  • Before bed: A good time for hands, feet, elbows and other dry-prone areas.

  • During the day: Use a smaller amount whenever hands or other areas feel dry.

Because the balm is water-free, temperature can affect its feel. It may become softer in a warm room and firmer in cooler conditions. This is normal for a balm made with natural tallow and cacao butter. Keep the lid closed, use clean dry fingers, and store it away from direct heat and strong sunlight.

Which tallow balm should you choose?

All DR GUS Nutrition tallow balms have the same rich, water-free balm base. The choice is mainly about whether you would prefer no added scent or a scent that suits your routine.

Whether you choose Unscented or one of the three scented balms, the application is the same: start with a small amount, warm it between your fingertips, and massage it into clean, slightly damp skin.

Common tallow balm mistakes to avoid

A few small habits can make a big difference to how the balm feels:

  • Using too much: Start with a tiny amount. You can always add more.

  • Applying it to completely dry skin: Slightly damp skin often helps it spread more easily.

  • Using wet fingers in the jar: Keep water out of the balm by using clean, dry hands.

  • Expecting it to feel like lotion: Tallow balm is richer and more concentrated than a conventional water-based moisturiser.

  • Leaving it in direct heat: Natural balms can soften when warm, so store yours in a cool, dry place.

  • Continuing after irritation: Stop using any product that causes a reaction. Cosmetic products can trigger contact dermatitis in some people, and the NHS advises seeking medical advice for persistent, recurrent or severe symptoms

A simple way to begin

Start with a small amount, apply it to clean, slightly damp skin, and allow it to settle. Choose Unscented for a completely fragrance-free routine, or select Lavender, Chamomile, or Basil, Lime & Lemongrass if you would like a botanical scent as part of your everyday skincare ritual.

Tallow balm does not need an elaborate routine. Used regularly and in small amounts, it can be an easy, comforting moisturising step for hands, body and dry-prone areas of the face.
