Tallow balm is a rich, water-free moisturising balm made using rendered animal fat—usually beef tallow. At DR GUS, we make ours by hand in the UK with just two ingredients: carefully prepared grass-fed tallow and certified-organic cacao butter.
It is a simple alternative to conventional creams, which are often made with water, emulsifiers, preservatives and long ingredient lists. Tallow balm has a more concentrated, buttery texture, so a little goes a long way.

Tallow is the purified fat from cattle. For skincare, it is slowly rendered and filtered to create a clean, stable, silky base for a balm. It is not raw fat, and it is not simply a kitchen ingredient transferred into a cosmetics jar; careful preparation is what gives a finished tallow balm its refined texture and makes it suitable for topical use.
Our Unscented Tallow Skin Balm keeps the formula deliberately minimal:
Grass-fed beef tallow provides the rich, protective balm base.
Certified-organic cacao butter adds a smooth, comforting feel and helps create the balm’s soft, scoopable texture.
That is all. There is no added fragrance, essential oil, water, filler, artificial colour or unnecessarily complicated ingredient list.
A water-free balm also does not require the same kind of emulsifying system as a conventional cream. Its texture may naturally firm up in cooler rooms or soften in warmth—this is normal for a product made from natural oils and butters.
Good tallow balm begins with careful preparation. We render and filter the tallow gently, then combine it with organic cacao butter before whipping the finished balm into a light, smooth texture.
The process matters because it helps turn a traditional material into something pleasant and practical for everyday skincare. We make our balms by hand in the UK, with the focus on simple ingredients, careful handling and a formula that feels good to use.

Our aim is not to add more ingredients for the sake of it. It is to make a straightforward balm well: thoughtfully sourced ingredients, careful preparation, and a finished product that suits a simple skincare routine.
Tallow balm is used to soften, condition and help reduce the feeling of dry, tight skin. Because it is concentrated and water-free, it leaves a protective, nourishing layer on the skin’s surface rather than disappearing immediately like a lightweight lotion.
People commonly use it on:
Dry hands, especially after washing or cold-weather exposure
Elbows, knees and shins
Rough patches and areas that feel tight
Cuticles and dry knuckles
Feet, heels and other areas that benefit from a richer balm
The face, where a small amount may suit those who prefer a minimal, oil-based moisturising routine
As with any skincare product, skin can react differently from person to person. If you have very sensitive or reactive skin, try a small patch test first and introduce the balm gradually.
Tallow balm is best applied sparingly. Start with less than you think you need, particularly when using it on the face.
Scoop out a pea-sized amount with clean, dry fingertips.
Warm it between your palms or fingertips for a few seconds.
Press or massage it into clean, slightly damp skin.
Allow a moment for the balm to soften and settle before applying more.
Applying it after a shower, bath or hand wash can work particularly well because slightly damp skin helps the balm spread easily. For hands and body, use it whenever skin feels dry. For the face, begin with a very small amount—especially if you are new to richer balms.

Tallow balm may be a good fit if you want a skincare product with a short ingredient list, prefer richer balms to light lotions, or are looking for a simple moisture step for dry areas of skin.
Our Unscented Tallow Skin Balm is the most minimal choice: no added scent and just grass-fed tallow with certified-organic cacao butter. If you enjoy a lightly scented option, explore the Lavender balm in the Tallow Skin Balm collection.
Tallow balm will not be for everyone. Its texture is richer than a conventional lotion, and it is animal-derived, so it is not suitable for vegan skincare routines. But for those who value traditional ingredients, small-batch making and a straightforward formula, it can be a deeply comforting addition to everyday skin care.
