  • The Problem With Hand Washing!

    October 01, 2020 2 min read 1 Comment

We have been seeing a lot of people with skin irritation of the hands and lower face in recent months. This is undoubtedly due to so much hand washing, use of hand sanitisers and use of masks.

The reason that they affect our skin so badly is the same reason that they are effective against viruses and bacteria. They actually damage the lipid membrane of the virus which then breaks down the DNA contained within the membrane. The problem is that our skin uses a similar protective layer as viruses and bacteria, which is known as sebum in human skin. This is our skin’s first line of defence against the external world.

As we wash and use sanitisers, we break down the lipid component of our skin barrier allowing environmental forces and foreign molecules to penetrate the skin, causing an immune response such as eczema. As well as being the first line of defence against the external world the skin barrier’s job is to retain moisture and nutrients within the skin to nourish and protect.

So, what can we do about this? Well the most sensible solution is to replace our sebum barrier with the closest matching lipid-based balm. The closest in terms of fatty acids is tallow, which is mostly triglycerides and some cholesterol – as close as possible to human sebum.

This is probably why we are getting such amazing feedback from people with eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis who use our balm and are able to reduce or eliminate their steroidal creams.

Here are some of reviews of our balm:

Have been asked to leave a review on behalf of my mother for the chamomile balm. This has relieved the itching and redness on her eyes which is caused by her eczema. Would really like to thank you.

Hi, I have been using your tallow skin balm now on my eyelid that is covered in contact dermatitis. I normally use steroid creams but am now able to go 5 days without any steroids thanks to using your balms daily. Thank you so much. Mary.

The lovely camomile skin balm has worked wonders on my daughters' hands which have become really sore and cracked with washing her hands so much. I had tried numerous hand creams but this one has really done the trick. Thank you Dr Gus 💚

The good news is all our balms are back in stock in all sizes but we do sell out quickly, especially at the moment. To get your balm click here!

At first I thought the skin balm was too heavy but after giving it a try I won’t wear any other cream at night. My skin looks great when I wake up. Wearing PPE all day long is troublesome but using the skin balm and the lip balm really protects my face and I’ve been rubbing it on my hands afterwards as well.
